Google Optimisation

July 29th, 2010

When Google looks at a website to determine where to place it in its search results it considers two main things. One of the considerations is On Page SEO; the other is Off Page SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is often the term used to shorten the phrase and make it more human and machine friendly.

Off Page SEO is generally speaking other websites that link to yours. Off Page SEO is one determining factor that Google looks for when ranking a site in their search engine. This is broken up into many different criteria. One of those is the quality a site that links to yours, if the website that links to yours is high in status, like a major successful website for example, this will have an impact on how Google looks at your website and where they rank you. Obviously many of these links will improve your websites positioning further.

Google also uses something that is more controllable for you as a webmaster, something that every webmaster should polish with every website they own. Some simple techniques can often get you ranking higher in the search engines almost instantly. I am talking about the other determining factor On Page SEO.

On Page SEO is basically optimizing your website for the search engines. To do this you need to operate by programming language rules like HTML for example and the search engine guidelines. Search engines in total use over 200 SEO factors. Obviously it would be impossible to optimize a website to follow them all. Some come naturally and you will find you website abides by many of these factors already but others need to be polished.

Now some On Page SEO ranking factors will always remain evasive and it is more or less impossible to abide by them all. Sometimes you will find polishing one factor means you are scoring lower in another factor, it can be very frustrating. The key is to abide by as many as possible. Most webmasters who optimize their websites do so by a series of educated guesses a long with what we know already. One recent On Page SEO factor is the websites loading speed. Google have said this will not hold a lot of weight in ranking but it is something they now consider when positioning a website. To overcome slow loading pages you can do simple things to cut down the size of your website, like smaller lower resolution images, hosting videos on third party sites and embedding them into yours rather than uploading and even keeping brief summaries of your content on your home page with click in options for more information.

Optimizing your website can take hours upon hours and most people skip On Page SEO in favour of Off Page SEO. This is a mistake people make far too often but always wonder why their website is not ranking well in Google. To have a website that is placed in the top 10 search results, On Page SEO needs to be looked into as well as Off Page. If not you could be sitting outside the top 10 until it is.

Tighten Your Belts – Google Caffeine Is In The Air

November 10th, 2009

This article is more of a quick touch-point on impending launch of Google Caffeine

The launch of Bing has been a challenge in more ways than one for Google. Under pressure to come up to speed with the changes in Search Engine Marketing and the rampant abuse of the search engines by sauve Internet Marketers, Google made it clear that the future of search will be dictated by Google Caffeine. Well, the name sounds so intoxicating. And as time passes, rumblings of launch of Google Caffeine gain credence all round.

What is Google Caffeine and how can you make the most of it?

What was the need for Google to come up with Google Caffeine? I think the answer lies in the mess created by acai berry and viagra sites. Now these sites have become a focus of FTC, and probably someone in Google foresaw this trend. And hence Google decided on the project to clean its own search. And the best way to do that is to tweak the algo. Amongst the changes expected in the algo will be a change in the weightage given to on-page optimization factors for ranking a website.

The aim is to make search cleaner, more relevant and friendly to the users. And eventually, break the cartel of spammers who put half-baked information on the web.

There is not much knowabout Caffeine to make any statement at this point. However, it is expected that the search criteria will focus on the content part of the website along with the off-page factors like backlinks. At present, there are more than 200 rank criteria in Google algorithm. A tweaking of these will probably be geared towards making the algo more in line with what Bing uses today.

For now, webmasters like me need not fear because we stand to gain with Google Caffeine. And if it turns out to be as lean and mean as it is being made out to be, who knows that you and me may be laughing our way to the Banks !!!

And with Matt Cutts headed over to the Pubcon in November, who knows that Caffeine may be just round the corner.

I hope that Google Caffeine brings value to the good webmasters who vouch for good, and original content.

You should also be aware of the two different types of search engine marketing. You can simply divide them into unethical and ethical methods. The former include selling text links, building link farms and basically falsely building up the traffic to your website through unnatural ways. This is against the terms of service of most of the search engines including Google. However, it is often offer easy to get caught with these methods but you may not want to take the risk.

If you are entirely rely and the Internet for your business revenue, then you may well consider it not worth the risk to use unethical methods of search engine optimisation. In fact, when there are so many ethical methods out there which are extremely effective, there is seldom any reason to take the risk.

Therefore, it is often advisable not to take the risks of using these unethical methods. Instead, you should be familiar with the ethical methods that the search engines don’t mind. Following in this article, a three methods which are completely in line with the terms and conditions of the various search engines out there which should get you started in getting a good amount of traffic to your website.

Article marketing is a good way to start. It is also completely free although you can spend a bit of extra money and to unique article wizards. This will save you a lot of time and also a generates a lot more backlinks. Anyone serious about search engine optimisation should be familiar with article marketing and unique article wizards. Basically, you write articles, post them on article directories and these articles include a link to your website. People read the articles and if they are interested in them, they will click on the link and go to your website. So, obviously the more articles you have available on the Internet, the more back links you have, the more your search engine traffic increases and the higher the chance of people finding your articles is.

Another good idea to get backlinks (backlinks being the key to your search engine PR) is to post on forums regularly. Only post on forums that are relevant to the niche of your website. If you post on forums which are not relevant to the niche of your website, then you are effectively spamming. Similarly, you should also comment on blogs which are also relevant to your niche. This also gives you the opportunity to post your link. However, you should use common sense with this practice and again, make sure that everything you post on other people’s blogs or forums, is have some use to somebody and not just pure advertising.

The third and possibly the most important and effective method of search engine optimisation of all is to make sure that your site is optimised itself. That means it should include the right frequency of keywords.
